Staying Sober Over During the Holidays

You have worked hard to get clean and sober and we want to help you stay that way. The holidays are a joyous time, but it can also be a time filled with triggers. Here are some tips to have fun during the holidays while taking care of your sobriety.

Make Self Care a Priority

It is easy to get swept up into the busy times during the holidays. Between family get togethers and holiday festivities it is easy to get overwhelmed. Remember to take time for yourself. Even doing something as simple as a 5 minute meditation will leave you feeling better. Take the time to take care of yourself, mind, body and soul.

Plan Ahead

If you are going to be attending holiday parties bring a sober buddy with you. Hold each other accountable and encourage each other to stay sober. Remember how good it feels to get a good night’s sleep and not wake up hungover.

Be Mindful of Triggers

It is ok to skip the holiday party with relatives or friends who are relapse triggers. It could be a relative or friend who you used to party with. Or it could be a relative or friend who gets under your skin and drives you to use. Notice those triggers and keep a healthy distance.

Create New Traditions

Find friends and family members who lift you up and celebrate together. You have come a long way in your sobriety and you deserve to celebrate. Find new and healthy ways to celebrate your sobriety.

Give Back

You can always keep yourself busy by volunteering to help with local recovery groups. You might be just the person someone needs in their lives to get through the holidays. Be an encouraging voice.

You can stay clean and sober this holiday season. Enjoy and remember every moment. And remember that we are here to help anytime you need us.
